SALSI Announces Clusters in Research Excellence Program

San Antonio Life Sciences Institute (SALSI) will kick off the Clusters in Research Excellence RFP at its Faculty Mixer on May 28.

The Clusters in Research Excellence program aims to develop strategic research clusters bridging UTSA and The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio over a 12 month period through capacity building and collaborative, interdisciplinary research to address global issues and challenges.  To this end, SALSI will establish and support two institutionally driven Clusters of Research Excellence in key thematic areas of strategic importance.  Clusters will be expected to enhance collaboration, expand interdisciplinary research capacity, and significantly raise the international research profile and competitiveness of both institutions.

As clusters will be expected to foster cutting-edge research of national and global impact in areas of major significance, SALSI has identified six overarching thematic areas.  These areas capture the breadth of research and scholarship between the two institutions and are recognized as established areas of research excellence.  It is expected that the projects will include interdisciplinary collaboration with the main focus on a Research Area of Excellence.

Research Areas of Excellence:

  • Neurosciences
  • Regenerative Medicine and Drug Discovery
  • Big Data Analytics in Health Care
  • Advanced Materials
  • Immunology and Infectious Diseases Public Health Policy
