Dixson earned a Ph.D. in Communication Studies from the University of Texas\, Austin. She has been leading faculty development initiatives for 8 years and has 20 years of experience teaching practical skills and theory in communication and public speaking.

SUMMARY:What Did You Tell the President? – Using Statistics to Make a Difference
DESCRIPTION:The Department of Management Science and Statistics at UTSA is proud to present the former EPA Chief Statistician and current ASA president\, Barry Nussbaum on Monday\, April 3\, 2017 at 6:00 p.m. in the Faculty Center (JPL 4.04.22) on the UTSA Main Campus. \nDr. Nussbaum’s talk\, entitled What Did You Tell the President? – Using Statistics to Make a Difference\, will present how statistics can make a big difference in influencing decisions and actions in a variety of fields and how to succinctly explain statistical results so that decision makers can correctly integrate analyses into their actions. Examples will include analyses used in court cases and material presented to the President of the United States. Further\, Big Data will be reviewed in the context of whether Uber is in the Big Data driver’s seat. \nThe event is free and open to the UTSA community and the public. Registration is not required. \nContact Dr. David Han at 210-458-7895 or david.han@utsa.edu for more information. \nDr. Barry NussbaumPresident of the American Statistical Association (ASA)Dr. Nussbaum started his career at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in 1975 in mobile sources. At the agency\, he founded and chaired the EPA Statistics Users Group. As the Chief Statistician at EPA\, Dr. Nussbaum achieved many successes using statistical analysis to promote health\, determine environmental policy\, and enforce regulations. In particular\, he was in charge of the successful drive to eliminate harmful lead from gasoline. Dr. Nussbaum served as chair of the ASA Statistics and Environment Section in 2000. From 2011 to 2015\, he chaired the ASA Statistical Partnerships among Academia\, Industry\, and Government (SPAIG) committee. In recognition of his notable accomplishments and contributions to statistics\, he was awarded the EPA Distinguished Career Service Award and elected an ASA fellow. In 2015\, Dr. Nussbaum was elected the 112th president of the American Statistical Association (ASA)\, the largest society of statisticians and data scientists. \nDr. Nussbaum has a bachelor’s degree from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and both master’s and doctoral degrees from the George Washington University. This event is supported by a generous contribution from the American Statistical Association.
