SUMMARY:Adopt a Free Textbook Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a conversation with UTSA faculty who are leveraging open educational resources to make an impact on student engagement and retention and reducing student costs. We’ll provide updates on UTSA’s OER growth and expansion and will provide information about the UTSA Libraries’ Adopt a Free Textbook grants available for faculty interested in incorporating free textbooks into their courses. \nView the Event Flyerregister to attendPresented By:Stan Renard\, Assistant Professor\, Music\nEmily Cox\, Humanities Librarian\, UTSA Libraries\nMUS 2263: Intro to the Music Industry\nStan worked closely with Emily Cox to develop a blog that both houses freely available industry music resources and serves as a repository where his students contribute additional learning materials. Because the blog is open access\, anyone can see it and use it\, including future UTSA music students and those in the community. \nJonathan Brucks\, Lecturer I\, Math\nCynthia McCowen\, Director of Tutoring Services\, Tomás Rivera Center\nMAT 1073: College Algebra\nJonathan and Cindy worked with TRC tutors over the Summer 2017 to create a supplement for Jonathan’s students\, who use the OpenStax College Algebra book as a primary text. Jonathan has paired the text with free class management/homework/quiz software and plans to use a similar design in other courses the department offers. \nGina Amatangelo\, Lecturer II\, Public Administration\nPAD 1113: Intro to Public Administration\nGina and Patricia Jaramillo (Senior Lecturer\, Public Administration) incorporated both freely available and library content into this course to create a tailored text. This approach has allowed them to teach using material from a range of textbook authors\, videos\, government reports\, as well as news and journal articles. They also utilize a subscription-based database in order to share case studies at no-cost to students. \nChristina Frasier\, Lecturer III\, Writing Program\nWRC 1013: Writing Composition\nChristina partnered with librarians DeeAnn Ivie and Tara Schmidt to lead the creation of a single WRC website to house both freely available and library resources for this class. All of the WRC 1013 instructors are now using this website as their primary text.
