SUMMARY:Implementing Active Learning Techniques in Mathematics Classes
DESCRIPTION:Active learning\, when properly incorporated into a course\, improves students’ performance while raising their level of interest and engagement. In this talk\, Dr. Shay Fuchs (Department of Mathematics at University of Toronto Mississauga) will explain what he means by ‘active learning’ and describe methods of successfully implementing this pedagogy into both large and small mathematics classes. Using examples from his own courses\, he will demonstrate different approaches for implementing student-centered pedagogy that may be applicable in any math course.  \nFunded by the Blumberg Professorship in Biology and Teaching to Edwin J. Barea Rodriguez in partnership with UTSA Math Matters Student Success Center. \nView the Event FlyerPresented By: UTSA Math Matters Student Success CenterDr. Shay FuchsDepartment of MathematicsUniversity of Toronto Mississauga

SUMMARY:College of Sciences Special Seminar - A Dialogue with 150 Students: Implementing Active Learning Techniques in Large Enrollment Classes
DESCRIPTION:Many North American schools are concerned with students’ performance in mathematics\, and more generally\, in science courses. Over the past 15 years\, there has been a growing interest in the use of active learning methods\, and in assessing the effectiveness of this pedagogy in post-secondary math and science classes. Active learning\, when properly incorporated into a course\, has been shown to improve students’ performance while raising their level of interest and engagement. \nIn this talk\, Dr. Shay Fuchs will explain what he means by ‘active learning’\, and how he fully converted a 700 -student Calculus course into an active learning course at the University of Toronto Mississauga. He will share details of the course design\, results\, as well as the successes (and the challenges) of the program.
