SUMMARY:Managing the Learning Environment
DESCRIPTION:Classroom management with shifting norms \nFaculty need to understand the shifting perspective on acceptable behavior for instructors and for students in the classroom.  Student classroom behavior which was previously considered unacceptable may now be acceptable\, or at least may need to be tolerated by the instructor.  Instructor classroom behavior which was previously considered acceptable or at least tolerated by students\, may now be unacceptable.  Instructors need to be aware of changing norms and may need to adapt to the new norms. \nBy attending this course participants will be able to: \n\nRecognize shifting norms for student behavior in the classroom.\nRecognize shifting norms for instructor behavior in the classroom.\nImplement strategies to avoid/defuse conflicts and keep the focus on student learning.\n\nOffered November 15\, 2019 Main Campus DEx Lab (AET 0.202)\, 12-1 pm\, lunch provided on site; simultaneously webcast in Zoom. He has acted as the teaching mentor to new faculty in mechanical engineering since 2015. He is the recipient of several department- and college-level teaching award\, the 2012 University of Texas System Regent’s Outstanding Teaching Award and the 2103 UTSA President’s Distinguished Achievement Award for Teaching Excellence. He was the 2018-2019 Chair for the UTSA Academy of Distinguished Teaching Scholars and was a presenter at the 2019 UTSA Provost Teaching Academy.
