SUMMARY:Mental Health First Aid Training
DESCRIPTION:This course teaches adults how to recognize the signs and symptoms that suggest a potential mental health challenge\, how to listen nonjudgmentally and give reassurance to the individual who may be experiencing a mental health challenge\, and how to refer a person to appropriate professional support and services. Upon completion of the six-hour training\, participants will receive a certificate. \nObjectives: \nBy the end of the course\, participants will be able to: \n\nDescribe the purpose and goals of Mental Health First Aid and the role of the Mental Health First Aider.\nIdentify the impact of mental health challenges on the well-being of adults in the U.S.\nExplain that recovery from a mental health challenge is possible.\nDescribe the principles of safety and privacy for both the Mental Health First Aider and the person receiving first aid.\nExplain the 5 steps of the Mental Health First Aid Action Plan (ALGEE) and be able to apply the appropriate steps.\nRecognize the signs and symptoms of mental health challenges that may impact adults.\nEvaluate the impact of early intervention on mental health challenges.\nChoose appropriate methods for self-care following the application of Mental Health First Aid in a crisis or non-crisis situation.\n\nFor more information or to enroll\, please contact Levi Rex at Levi.Rex@utsa.edu\, the instructor.

Join us on this journey to shift the student success mindset at UTSA. \nJoin UTSA Student Success for the second series of Thrive events featuring Dr. Laurie Schreiner\, professor of higher education at Azusa Pacific University and author of the Thriving Quotient. She has consulted with over 150 colleges and universities on issues of student success\, strengths-based education\, retention\, academic advising\, student satisfaction\, and effective teaching strategies.   \n\nWorkshop 1: Thriving While Invisible: How to Help Sophomores and Transfers Get the Most Out of Their Campus Experience\nMost institutions do a great job of welcoming first-year students to campus\, orienting them to what lies ahead\, and helping them navigate the challenges of being in college. But once that first-year ends\, these students become “invisible” on campus\, as the institution turns its attention to the next group of incoming students. As a result\, many sophomores feel abandoned and a bit adrift. Transfer students often experience a similar abandonment\, feeling invisible on a campus. Hosted by the Academy of Distinguished Teaching Scholars\, celebrate the exceptional teachers that make our top tier university a place where students thrive. \n\nJoin us for an inspiring and insightful talk by one of UT System’s most prestigious teaching scholars. Free and open to all. \nFaculty may include this event as professional development in Digital Measures. \nStrategic Confusion and the Joy of Accomplishment\nGreat teachers are skillful experience-creators. Although it’s certainly necessary at times for teachers to explain and demonstrate\, our students learn most when they engage in activities that ask them to interpret\, reason\, write\, and solve problems\, all of which can lead to students uncovering and working through gaps in their understanding. Designing tasks that illuminate these gaps and providing strategic opportunities for productive muddling are what great teaching and effective learning are all about. \nBob Duke is the Marlene and Morton Meyerson Centennial Professor and Head of Music and Human Learning at The University of Texas at Austin\, where he is a University of Texas and University of Texas System Distinguished Teaching Professor\, Elizabeth Shatto Massey Distinguished Fellow in Teacher Education\, and Director of the Center for Music Learning.
