SUMMARY:
DESCRIPTION:A new exhibit\, “Cultural Bounty: The Beckstead • Lerma • Annala Collection\,” is a showpiece of the UTSA Art Collection. It features 48 artistic pieces from internationally renowned artists such as Andy Warhol and Robert Mapplethorpe and emerging local and Texas artists such as Sara Vanderbeek\, Fernando Andrade\, and UTSA alum Richard Armendariz (’95). The exhibit will run from Thursday\, August 1\, to Saturday\, November 2\, 2024\, at the UTSA Southwest Campus Russell Hill Rogers Galleries. \nCultural Bounty offers visitors a chance to experience a diverse array of powerful artistic expressions. Among the highlights are iconic creations such as “Electric Chair” and “Witch” by Warhol and a single-color photo “Ken Moody\, (Nude with Leaf) by Mapplethorpe. In addition to these illustrious names\, the exhibit will spotlight works created in San Antonio’s vibrant arts community. The exhibit will include works from Texas artists such as Raul Rene Gonzalez’s “O’Banion’s Car Wash” a pen on paper\, Andrade’s stone lithograph “A Jugar La Pinche Guerrita\,” Armendariz’s wood block print “Nocturne Healer I” Abraham Mojica’s “No Regrets” an acrylic on canvas\, painting of the three donors\, “Steve\, Danny\, and Alan.” \nPresented by UTSA Arts in partnership with the UTSA Libraries and the UTSA School of Art. \nRegister for the Opening ReceptionView the exhibit page

SUMMARY:Digital Activism and Data Visualization: Mapping Gender-Based Violence through GraphCommons
DESCRIPTION:This workshop explores the intersection of digital activism\, data collection\, and visualization techniques in the context of gender-based violence and feminist movements. Participants will learn how to harness the power of GraphCommons to create impactful visualizations that can amplify marginalized voices and reveal hidden patterns in complex social issues. \nDrawing from real-world examples such as the “Women Life Freedom” movement in Iran\, we will discuss the importance of digital activism in transnational advocacy networks. Participants will gain hands-on experience in collecting and organizing data\, with a focus on ethical considerations and feminist data practices.\nKey topics include: \n• Introduction to digital activism and its cultural impact\n• Data collection strategies for sensitive topics\n• Principles of feminist data visualization\n• Hands-on tutorial using GraphCommons\n• Creating effective narratives through data\n• Challenges and future directions in digital activism \nThis workshop is ideal for activists\, researchers\, students\, and anyone interested in using technology to drive social change. SUMMARY:LGBTQ+ Oral Histories: Practice and Connection with Communities
DESCRIPTION:The Community-engaged Digital Scholarship Hub (CEDISH)\, an initiative of the UTSA Libraries and Museums that promotes collaborative teaching and research using digital methods\, will sponsor a roundtable discussion featuring library professionals and student scholars who will share their personal and professional experiences in preserving LGBTQ+ voices. \nThe panel will feature a diverse group of scholars and archivists who bring unique perspectives and experiences to the discussion\, each contributing to preserving and celebrating LGBTQ+ stories. They will share their experiences and insights and reflect on their efforts to engage with queer communities in Kansas\, Texas\, and Mexico. \nMelissa Gohlke\, an assistant archivist with UTSA Libraries Special Collections who earned her M.A. in History from UTSA in 2012\, will present archival materials from the university’s LGBTQ+ community collections. \nTami Albin\, an associate librarian at the University of Kansas and director of the Under the Rainbow project\, will share insights from her work documenting LGBTQ+ voices in Kansas. \nKevin Alvarez Reyes\, a UTSA master’s student whose academic work focuses on Queer Studies and migration\, will discuss the power of oral histories in representing marginalized voices in the context of migration and identity. \nEmily Gracielle Rodriguez-Guajardo\, Rodriguez-Guajardo\, a master’s student in Spanish\, uses literature and digital humanities to advocate for spaces where LGBTQ+ individuals can express complex cross-cultural identities. \nRegister for this event
