SUMMARY:What Did You Tell the President? – Using Statistics to Make a Difference
DESCRIPTION:The Department of Management Science and Statistics at UTSA is proud to present the former EPA Chief Statistician and current ASA president\, Barry Nussbaum on Monday\, April 3\, 2017 at 6:00 p.m. in the Faculty Center (JPL 4.04.22) on the UTSA Main Campus. \nDr. Nussbaum’s talk\, entitled What Did You Tell the President? – Using Statistics to Make a Difference\, will present how statistics can make a big difference in influencing decisions and actions in a variety of fields and how to succinctly explain statistical results so that decision makers can correctly integrate analyses into their actions. Examples will include analyses used in court cases and material presented to the President of the United States. Further\, Big Data will be reviewed in the context of whether Uber is in the Big Data driver’s seat. \nThe event is free and open to the UTSA community and the public. Registration is not required. \nContact Dr. David Han at 210-458-7895 or david.han@utsa.edu for more information. \nDr. Barry NussbaumPresident of the American Statistical Association (ASA)Dr. Nussbaum started his career at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in 1975 in mobile sources. At the agency\, he founded and chaired the EPA Statistics Users Group. As the Chief Statistician at EPA\, Dr. Nussbaum achieved many successes using statistical analysis to promote health\, determine environmental policy\, and enforce regulations. In particular\, he was in charge of the successful drive to eliminate harmful lead from gasoline. Dr. Nussbaum served as chair of the ASA Statistics and Environment Section in 2000. From 2011 to 2015\, he chaired the ASA Statistical Partnerships among Academia\, Industry\, and Government (SPAIG) committee. In recognition of his notable accomplishments and contributions to statistics\, he was awarded the EPA Distinguished Career Service Award and elected an ASA fellow. In 2015\, Dr. Nussbaum was elected the 112th president of the American Statistical Association (ASA)\, the largest society of statisticians and data scientists. \nDr. Nussbaum has a bachelor’s degree from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and both master’s and doctoral degrees from the George Washington University. This event is supported by a generous contribution from the American Statistical Association.

Before joining UTSA\, she was the research director for the Georgetown Institute for Consumer Research at the McDonough School of Business\, Georgetown University. She holds a Ph.D. in social psychology from Indiana University and an M.A. from Wake Forest University. Her key research interests are word of mouth\, social influence\, embodiment\, and culture. Her research has appeared in the Washington Post\, USA Today\, and U.S. News\, and she has written for the Huffington Post blog. She is teaching her first online course – Principles of Marketing – this semester.Claudia ArcolinSenior Instructional Designer for the Office of Online LearningShe has been working in the field of education and instructional technology since 2003. She holds a doctorate in Cognitive and Training Sciences and a Master in Continuing Education and E-Learning. Her areas of interests include student-generated content\, open educational resources\, gamification\, and communities of learning and informal learning environments. She is the instructor for the self-paced Teaching Online Course.

DESCRIPTION:On behalf of the Office of the Vice President for Research at the University of Texas at San Antonio\, you are invited to attend an upcoming lecture by Dr. Reggie Brothers\, Principal at The Chertoff Group and former Under Secretary for Science and Technology at the Department of Homeland Security. Dr Brothers will be discussing the rapidly changing climate of the science and technology industry and different models and strategies to help maximize your role in advancing S&T ECOSYSTEM 2.0. \nReggie Brothers\, PhDEE and CSPrincipal at The Chertoff GroupPrevious Government Experience:\n– Under Secretary for Science and Technology\, DHS (2014–2017)\n– Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Research\, DoD (2011–2014)\n– Program Manager\, Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (2002–2007) \nAt DHS\, Dr. Brothers was responsible for a science and technology portfolio that includes basic and applied research\, development\, demonstration\, testing\, and evaluation with the purpose of helping DHS operational elements and the Nation’s first responders achieve their missions in the most effective\, most efficient\, and safest manner possible. At DoD\, he was responsible for policy and oversight of the Department’s science and technology programs from basic research through advanced technology development. Dr. Brothers was also responsible for the Department’s laboratories and\, as architect of the long-term strategic direction of the Department’s science and technology programs\, oversaw scientific advancements necessary for the continued technological superiority of U.S. Armed Forces. \nAt DARPA\, Dr. Brothers developed programs across a variety of technical disciplines including wireless and optical communications\, precision navigation and timing\, RADAR and LADAR. Dr. Brothers was also a Technical Director at BAE Systems\, a Group Leader at the Charles Stark Draper Laboratory\, Assistant Group Leader at MIT Lincoln Laboratory\, and Principal Architect at a successful wireless start-up company. \nAt Chertoff Group\, Dr. Brothers will bring to bear his extensive experience across the Science and Technology Ecosystem (Government\, Industry\, Non-Profits\, National Laboratories and Academia). The main campus of the laboratory is located in Richland\, Washington. \nWe are pleased to welcome PNNL researchers to UTSA for the following guest lectures. \n\nSAMUEL CLEMENTS | 10:00am – 10:45am\nBlended Attacks: Integrating Cyber and Physical Assessments\nBoth physical and cyber security domains offer solutions for the discovery of vulnerabilities\, but neither method fully represents the true potential security risk to a site\, facility\, or asset nor comprehensively assesses the overall security posture. This project evaluated physical and cyber vulnerability analysis (VA) techniques and provided a strategic approach to integrating the interdependent relationships of each into a single VA capability\, enabling increased identification and assessment of the true overall risk during a vulnerability assessment. \nWILL HUTTON | 10:45am – 11:30am\nTeaching a Computer to Fight Itself (Implementing an ORGE AI in Python)\nOGRE is an asymmetric board game created in 1977 simulating a futuristic fighting force of infantry and armor against a single\, massive\, artificially intelligent cyber tank. Figuring out a winning strategy was difficult\, so I taught my computer how to play the game using Python and genetic algorithms\, so my program could learn how to play the game better. \nBiographies: \nSAM CLEMENTS\, upon graduating from Carnegie Mellon University’s Masters of Information Security\, Policy\, and Management program\, recognized the need to expand cyber security research beyond information technology systems to the control systems that run our nation’s critical infrastructure. As a recipient of the Scholarship for Service program\, he looked across the federal government and federally funded research and development centers to find where this research was occurring and in 2008 began working as a Cyber Security Researcher at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. PNNL’s strong ties to the US electrical grid made it a natural fit. Sam’s research has covered technical evaluations of wireless systems for use in critical infrastructure systems\, secure network architectures\, and blending physical and cyber security assessment processes for which he was awarded a patent. \nWILLIAM HUTTON spent four years active duty with the United States Army as a military intelligence and electronic warfare specialist. He received his bachelor of arts in philosophy and computer science from Central Washington University in 1999. William has over 20 years of software development experience\, spent five years working at the Pacific Northwest’s only operating nuclear reactor\, and two years at the Hanford site before coming to the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. While at PNNL\, William has\nfocused on protecting critical infrastructure\, cyber and physical security\, cryptography\, and resiliency. He was a faculty mentor of CEE Study Abroad Program in Urbino\, Italy and is currently working on a course re-design plan for CEE courses with dense-curriculum.

SUMMARY:Smart City Lecture
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nBuildings in cities consume 30-70% of the total primary energy. There are opportunities to reduce city building energy use by 30 to 50% using currently available technologies. This talk presents several research projects on smart cities funded by US Department of Energy\, including the exascale computing project multiscale coupled urban systems. The talk will cover recently developed data\, tools\, and case studies to support cities’ building energy efficiency programs. Challenges of data integration\, modeling and simulation of buildings at the city scale will be discussed. \nDr. TianzhenDr. Tianzhen Hong is a Staff Scientist and Deputy Head of Building Technology Department of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL). He is co-leading the urban systems initiative at LBNL\, an operating agent of IEA EBC Annex 66 on occupant behavior in buildings\, and an editor of Energy and Buildings. He received B.Eng. in HVACR\, Ph.D. in Building Performance Modeling and Simulation\, and B.Sc. in Applied Mathematics from Tsinghua University\, China.

She currently serves as the Lead Editor of the Association of Mexican American Educators (AMAE) Journal. She is a nominee for the Regents Outstanding Teaching Award. For over two decades she has worked with non-profits\, schools\, and research organizations\, both in Texas and California\, to improve the educational and economic success of Latina/o immigrants in the US.Julie SchellDirector of OnRamps and Strategic Initiatives\, University of Texas at AustinJulie Schell is Director of OnRamps and Strategic Initiatives and a Clinical Assistant Professor at The University of Texas at Austin. She teaches two graduate courses: Technology and Innovation in Higher Education and Problems of College Teaching and Learning. Julie has a doctorate in Higher and Postsecondary Education from Teachers College\, Columbia University and an M.S. in Counseling and Educational Psychology. She also completed a four year postdoctoral fellowship in pedagogical innovation at Harvard University in 2013.
