SUMMARY:Improving Student Engagement in Large Classes
DESCRIPTION:Student learning happens when students are actively doing instead of passively listening. A concern many teachers have with the use of active learning approaches (or inquiry learning)\, however\, is one of not having enough time to cover the course material. This talk will introduce instructors to evidence-based active learning techniques that can be used with large classes (defined as > 100 students) while addressing instructor concerns about covering content. \nDuring this session Dr. Milos Savic will be joining us from the University of Oklahoma to share his motivation and ideas for teaching creatively in large classes. \n  \nView the Event FlyerPresented By: Math DepartmentDr. Milos SavicUniversity of Oklahoma

SUMMARY:Fostering Mathematical Creativity in a Classroom and its Effects
DESCRIPTION:Mathematical creativity is often discussed amongst mathematicians\, but is not as common in undergraduate settings. Dr. Milos Savic from the University of Oklahoma will present how his Creativity Research Group is examining creativity in the undergraduate classroom\, particularly the ways that creativity is explicitly fostered and the effects of such a pedagogy on students. In this talk\, he will demonstrate the findings of the group by immersing the audience in such a course\, interacting while highlighting the research. He will conclude by offering and soliciting conjectures about creativity in the classroom. You can see his work here. \nView the Event FlyerPresented By: Department of Mathematics\n
