SUMMARY:National Academies of Science\, Engineering\, and Medicine (NASEM) Forum on Postsecondary Response to COVID
DESCRIPTION:NASEM Forum on Postsecondary Response to COVID-19 \nWhat are possible long term implications of postsecondary responses? \nAs we now all too clearly understand\, we are in the midst of what could become the worst infectious disease outbreak of our time—a contagion so serious that in a short time it has resulted in public health emergencies around the globe\, disrupted the global economy\, and has changed the very way we live. But we’re not defenseless. Today\, we not only understand the nature of pathogens more than ever before\, but we also have unprecedented capabilities and tools to fight them. \nThe Board on Higher Education of the National Academies of Sciences\, Engineering\, and Medicine will be hosting a series of conversations to bring together academic\, industry\, government\, and civic leaders across the country to understand the varied facets of what has happened so far\, what is currently happening\, and what is expected to happen in the weeks and months ahead. Each conversation will focus on a specific topic related to how the 4\,000+ colleges and universities—and the researchers who work there—are supporting the response efforts. \nRegister for this eventPresented By: National Academies of Sciences\, Engineering\, and Medicine

SUMMARY:Artificial Intelligence and Health Care Webinar
DESCRIPTION:This free webinar\, jointly hosted by the National Academy of Medicine (NAM) and the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) will explore the vision\, opportunities\, challenges\, and implications of the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in health care. Speakers will review two recent publications focused on AI and health care published by the NAM and GAO. Artificial Intelligence in Health Care: The Hope\, the Hype\, the Promise\, the Peril was published in December 2019 and outlines current and near-term AI solutions; highlights the challenges\, limitations\, and best practices for AI development\, adoption\, and maintenance; offers an overview of the legal and regulatory landscape for AI tools designed for health care application; and outlines key considerations for moving forward\, including prioritizing the need for equity\, inclusion\, and a human rights lens for this work. GAO’s technology assessment Artificial Intelligence in Health Care: Benefits and Challenges of Machine Learning in Drug Development discusses current and emerging AI technologies available for drug development and their potential benefits; challenges to the development and adoption of these technologies; and policy options to address challenges to the use of machine learning in drug development. Machine learning has the potential to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of the drug development process\, decreasing the time and cost required to bring new drugs to market\, but several challenges hinder its adoption and impact. The report identifies policy options to address these challenges centered around promoting basic research\, increasing data access and sharing\, establishing standards\, developing human capital\, clarifying regulatory certainty\, and maintaining the status quo. \nThis webinar will provide an overview of each publication and feature a panel discussion of experts after each overview. \nAs a courtesy to the individuals from Stanford University involved in this webinar the Stanford Center for Continuing Medical Education is pleased to offer CME credit for this activity. To access the CME information and to claim credit please visit: https://stanford.cloud-cme.com/AIHealthcare \nRegister for this eventPresented By: National Academy of Medicine

SUMMARY:Why Contemporary University-Industry Partnerships Matter
DESCRIPTION:Basic research\, much of which emanates from the world’s outstanding academic laboratories\, is the foundation for the innovation that has created the new therapies\, materials\, and processes that benefit humankind and generate wealth for companies that successfully translate discoveries to commercial success. This is not a linear\, one-way process; optimizing the process of discovery to innovation demands dynamic and multifaceted approaches to teaming at the university-industry interface. \nMany faculty\, students and other academic representatives are keenly interested in exploring strategic and tactical approaches for leveraging these corporate relationships to advance their interests. This presentation will explore some contemporary issues\, new approaches and some trends impacting collaboration. \nView the Event FlyerRegister for this eventPresented By: UTSA Knowledge EnterpriseAnthony M. Boccanfuso\, PH.D.President\, University Industry Demonstration Partnership (UIDP)Since 2007\, Tony has led the UIDP (uidp.org)\, a project oriented\, membership organization comprised of leading innovation firms and outstanding research universities from around the world. Tony derives tremendous satisfaction in leading the UIDP as it pursues its goal of improving partnerships between the academic and corporate sectors and helping its members achieve meaningful impact on a broad array of university-industry collaboration matters ranging from contracting\, commercialization\, and workforce development. SUMMARY:Providing and Promoting Self-Motivation and Success Skills
DESCRIPTION:Providing and Promoting Self-Motivation and Success Skills \nPart of the Summer Digital Teaching Forum Series \nKeeping students motivated to succeed throughout the semester is a perennial concern for many faculty. This concern may be compounded while teaching online and remotely\, as both we and our students may be living on very different schedules than we would face-to-face. Identifying techniques and content that can be delivered to students to promote their own awareness and autonomy is key. \nIn this forum\, panelists will discuss how they created techniques to stay motivated online from the student\, staff\, and faculty perspectives and how we can deliver that content to students in a way to keep them motivated and successful.  An open forum for questions and answers will follow. \nPresenters: \n\nErica Sosa\, Public Health\nPaul Rodriguez\, First-Gen and Transfer Student Center\nHeather Frazer\, Academic Success Coaching (Tomás Rivera Center)\n\njoin via zoom
