SUMMARY:Student-Centered Mentoring: Bridging the Gap Between Faculty and Students
DESCRIPTION:This workshop is dedicated to enhancing academic mentoring by emphasizing the unique needs and expectations of students\, particularly those from diverse backgrounds. It aims to bridge the gap between faculty mentors and their students\, helping faculty understand what students of diverse backgrounds want them to know about effective mentoring. In this workshop\, we’ll explore the perspectives of students shedding light on their needs and preferences when it comes to mentorship. We’ll also discuss the challenges and constraints faculty members often face that hinder their ability to provide effective mentoring to these students. Faculty members will leave with practical strategies to foster inclusive\, equitable\, and effective mentoring relationships\, ensuring that all students\, regardless of their backgrounds\, can thrive academically. \nPresented By: ncfdd\nFacilitator: Alejandra Durán Trinidad\, PhD Candidate & Melanie Morgan\, PhDRegister for this eventView more information

SUMMARY:Texas Baking\, Plain & Fancy
DESCRIPTION:Join the UTSA Institute of Texan Cultures as food historian Rebecca Sharpless\, author of “Grain and Fire: History of Baking in the American South\,” discusses how food customs shape cultures. \nWhether you like biscuits\, cornbread\, hot rolls\, flour or corn tortillas – how you answer may say a lot about you. Sharpless will talk about how baked goods have shaped Texans and how Texans have shaped baked goods\, from the Native women making bread with acorns to recent immigrants spicing up their baked goods with flavors from home. \nTo complement the evening’s discussion\, several local bakeries will serve baked goods detailed in the book and the evening’s presentation.
