SUMMARY:Communicating Successfully to Lay Audiences
DESCRIPTION:Regardless of their field\, all academics have phrases\, jargon\, and modes of expression. How we talk among ourselves rarely translates into an easily understood message for the layperson. Indeed\, we may not even recognize the specialized forms of communication we use in our ‘tribe’. However\, federal and state funding agencies increasingly require a layperson’s summary statement. Moreover\, proposals for many private foundations may have layperson reviewers in positions of influence – clear communication with them is essential even as you are conveying your ideas to experts. And there is always the chance of an encounter with a university administrator\, politician\, or key community member. In this interactive webinar\, we start by providing tips on effective communication for the layperson\, and then dissect’ volunteered short layperson summaries to provide further insight into reaching the layperson. \nNSF CAREER applicants often partner with a variety of community stakeholders\, including center and organization directors\, superintendents of Independent School Districts\, and members of the community. Some of these stakeholders may want a layperson’s summary to review the proposed research and educational plans before agreeing to a letter of collaboration. \nPlease email Scholarly.Awards@utsa.edu with questions regarding the information session and the NSF CAREER program. \nPresented By: Richard H. Nader\, PhD\, and Warren Burggren\, PhD\, Global Proposal Solutions\nRichard H. SUMMARY:Integrating Generative AI into Engineering Education: Design and Deployment of an AI Studio for MEP Class | Generative AI Peer Learning Network
DESCRIPTION:Are you curious about how generative AI is transforming higher education? Do you want to be at the forefront of these changes at UT San Antonio? \nJoin us for this month’s Generative AI Peer Learning Network featuring Tianzhi He\, as we connect with a supportive community dedicated to exploring how AI tools can transform teaching and learning. \nTianzhi He\, Assistant Professor in the School of Civil & Environmental Engineering and Construction Management (CECM) at The University of Texas at San Antonio\, will present the development and classroom deployment of the MEP AI Studio\, a multi-agent generative AI system designed to support teaching and learning in CSM 4643 (Mechanical\, Electrical\, and Plumbing Systems). The MEP AI Studio leverages a set of specialized AI agents tailored to different instructional use cases\, including a Q&A Tutor for textbook-based concept clarification\, a Case Discussion agent for peer-style critical thinking\, a Revit Modeling assistant for workflow guidance\, and a Scenario Role-Play agent for experiential learning. The system is built on the Botpress platform and is seamlessly integrated into Canvas\, enabling students to interact with AI directly within their course environment without needing to navigate to external tools or platforms. This integration lowers barriers to adoption and supports continuous\, in-context learning. In this session\, He will share the system design\, including the multi-agent pipeline\, prompt engineering strategies\, and interaction flow that guide students across different learning modes. The presentation will also highlight example classroom use cases demonstrating how students engage with the system for both conceptual understanding and practical skill development. Finally\, He will discuss initial student feedback and reflect on the opportunities\, challenges\, and lessons learned from integrating generative AI into a senior-level engineering course. \nSince its launch in January 2023\, the network has become a central hub for faculty and staff from across campus to explore\, experiment\, and collaborate. \nAs a member\, you’ll have the opportunity to: \n\nDiscover new teaching strategies that responsibly and effectively integrate AI.\nStay ahead of the curve on the latest trends and applications.\nContribute to a growing ecosystem that is shaping the future of learning at our university.\n\nThis is more than just a network\, it’s a space for you to amplify your voice and help guide UT San Antonio’s thoughtful and innovative approach to generative AI. We invite you to join us every last Tuesday of the month and help shape the future. \nLearn more about the Generative AI Peer Learning Network. \nCreating an effective learning environment for all is important to us.
