But bacteria have become increasingly resistant to antibiotics. Join us as Dr. Klose explores the profiles of bacteria and their sinister ways of evolving into antibiotic-resistant Superbugs. \nKARL KLOSE\nProfessor of Microbiology\nCollege of Sciences \nA member of UTSA’s faculty since 2004\, Dr. Klose’s research focuses on understanding bacterial pathogenesis in order to develop effective vaccines and therapeutics. He is the founder of the South Texas Center for Emerging Infectious Diseases\, which consists of 18 infectious disease laboratories. His TEDx talk on antibiotic-resistant bacteria (bit.ly/KloseTED) has received over 117\,000 views. He is the host of the ASM podcast “microTalk” (asm.org/Podcasts/microTalk)\, infectious conversations about microbes based at UTSA but distributed throughout the globe. Dr. Klose received his Ph.D. in Microbiology from UC Berkeley and was elected a fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology in 2015. \n6:00 P.M. Doors open\, cash bar available\n6:30 P.M. Talk begins\n7:15 P.M. Meet the speaker mix and mingle \nSan Antonio Botanical Garden\n555 Funston Place \nFree and Open to the Public\nCash Bar\nLight Refreshments \nPRESENTED BY THE COLLEGE OF SCIENCES \nFor questions or more information\, contact Edda Wallace at 210.458.5110 or edda.wallace@utsa.edu \nView more information

SUMMARY:Academy Fellows Speaker Series - The Role of Mexican & U.S. Universities: Societal Fatigue & Frustration in an Era of Change
DESCRIPTION:**NO REGISTRATION REQUIRED** \nGuest Speaker: Sergio Alcocer\, Ph.D.\, Research Professor\, Institute of Engineering – National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) \nThe relation between the United States and Mexico is one of the most dynamic\, diverse and complex of any relation between neighboring countries. Whether we examine human interaction across the border region; trade and value chain integration well inside our countries; security at large; and shared management of ecosystems\, just to mention a few topics\, the breadth and intensity of our intertwined relation is both impressive and mesmerizing. \nThis era could be characterized by rapid and uncertain changes due to the convergence of technologies; the impact of fake news and social media on people´s perceptions and decisions; society´s tiredness and frustration of unequal access to opportunities and development; the fast integration of countries in regions to compete on the basis of knowledge; and\, the global dynamism that pushes our national identities aside. \nIt is the aim of this talk to highlight the significant role that Mexican and American universities can play to harness common opportunities\, to build bridges between our societies and for developing a region of shared prosperity and social well-being\, all supported by education\, research and innovation. The critical importance of universities\, like UT San Antonio\, in educating students from all over the world will be emphasized. \nView the Event FlyerPresented By: Presidential Task Force on Research Excellence
