SUMMARY:Thrive Workshop: Thriving While Invisible - How to Help Sophomores and Transfers Get the Most Out of Their Campus Experience
DESCRIPTION:What does it look like when our students thrive? We’re building a student success ecosystem at UTSA where academic success is only part of the picture. When students thrive\, they are doing well academically\, psychologically\, physically and socially. Join us on this journey to shift the student success mindset at UTSA. \nJoin UTSA Student Success for the second series of Thrive events featuring Dr. Laurie Schreiner\, professor of higher education at Azusa Pacific University and author of the Thriving Quotient. She has consulted with over 150 colleges and universities on issues of student success\, strengths-based education\, retention\, academic advising\, student satisfaction\, and effective teaching strategies.   \n\nWorkshop 1: Thriving While Invisible: How to Help Sophomores and Transfers Get the Most Out of Their Campus Experience\nMost institutions do a great job of welcoming first-year students to campus\, orienting them to what lies ahead\, and helping them navigate the challenges of being in college. But once that first-year ends\, these students become “invisible” on campus\, as the institution turns its attention to the next group of incoming students. As a result\, many sophomores feel abandoned and a bit adrift. Transfer students often experience a similar abandonment\, feeling invisible on a campus. This workshop will focus on the specific needs of these “invisible” students\, highlighting national research about the campus experiences that help these students make the most of this pivotal year and thrive. \nAudience: Administrators\, staff\, faculty and student employees \n\nUTSA Thrive is a grant-funded student success initiative focused on enhancing support and advocacy for underserved populations (first-generation\, economically disadvantaged\, and students of color) by developing a thriving student framework and strengthening the integration of support services across multiple student success units at the university. \nRegister for this eventView more information

SUMMARY:From Classroom to Workforce: Generative AI and Career Readiness
DESCRIPTION:As colleges and universities grapple with the (seemingly) rapid public availability of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) platforms like ChatGPT\, administrators and teachers are working to better understand the role and impact of GenAI in educational settings. Part of this scrutiny\, though\, needs to be expanded beyond the classroom to considerations about GenAI and student career readiness. This presentation will address three interlocking questions in order to better prepare administrators and teachers for thinking about how to integrate GenAI technologies into their curricula. First\, the presentations will provide a (very) brief overview as to how GenAI works and why it disrupts some of the foundational premises on which contemporary educational practices are based. Second\, this presentation will provide some considerations as to how GenAI technologies might be synthesized into various curricula. Third\, it will take up ways in which those curricular integrations might best serve student career readiness and workplace preparedness. Note\, though\, that this presentation is not intended as a comprehensive or definitive address of these subjects but is intended to invigorate conversations among administrators and teachers at UTSA. \nBy attending this course\, participants will be able to:1. Explore the disruptive potential of GenAI for contemporary educational practices.2. Understand how GenAI technologies integrate into various curricula.3. Leverage these curricular integrations to prepare students for the workforce. \nSid Dobrin is Professor and Chair of the Department of English at the University of Florida (UF). He is the Founding Director of the Trace Innovation Initiative and serves as a Digital Thought Leader for Adobe. He is a member of the Florida Institute for National Security (FINS)\, part of UF’s Artificial Intelligence Initiative.
