SUMMARY:Understanding Metadata and Cultural Heritage in Digital Humanities Projects
DESCRIPTION:What is metadata and how does it affect digital humanities project work? In this workshop\, we will review the basic concept of metadata and how it can influence digital projects\, particularly those that include images like exhibits and mapping. Through the lens of preserving cultural heritage\, you will learn about some of the more popular types of metadata schema and participate in a hands-on Dublin Core cataloging exercise. We plan to make time to open a discussion after the exercise is completed. \nPlease feel welcome to bring questions about specific work you have questions about. \nLimited to 10 attendees \nRegister for this eventPresented By:Veronica Garcia RodriguezUTSA Libraries Head of Digital Humanities and User Engagement• Focused on creating public facing digital humanities projects\, particularly those that include the local San Antonio community\n• Background in libraries\, archives and museums\n• BA in Art History\, Theory and Criticism from the University of Illinois at Chicago\n• MSLIS from Pratt Institute in New York City with a concentration in Digital Management for Cultural HeritageElliot WilliamsUTSA Libraries Metadata Strategist• Ensures that UTSA Libraries’ collections are discoverable and usable by all\n• Coordinates metadata policies and practices across repositories and systems to promote metadata quality\, interoperability\, and re-use\n• BA in Archaeology from Willamette University\n• MA in History from the University of Miami\n• MS in Information Studies from the University of Texas\n• ORCiD ID – 0000-0001-6925-7144.

SUMMARY:SEMINAR - Using machine learning to generate neighborhood definitions: The application of hierarchical clustering and commuting zones at the Census Tract level. - Texas Research Data Center
DESCRIPTION:Presented By: Michael C. Lotspeich-Yadao\, University of Illinois\, Urbana-ChampaignVariation in the definitions of spatial units substantially impacts the validation of causal relationships between individual and ecological contexts. Acknowledging this significant influence of neighborhood definition on research outcomes\, our study seeks to introduce a scalable methodological innovation by synthesizing Tolbert and Killian’s (1987) proportional flow methodology with Kwan’s (2012a; 2012b; 2018) lessons in defining neighborhoods. Our new solution\, providing scalable Census tract-level ‘Commuting Zones’\, allows researchers to account for the scale of spatial units and their internal and inter-unit mobility patterns. \nCommuting zones are based on the daily travel between where people live and work. Our methodology uses this information\, derived from the public LEHD-LODES data\, to define neighborhood areas based on strong commuting patterns. This approach has the potential to yield a more accurate and meaningful understanding of human behavior and health outcomes\, calibrated to the realities of lived experiences rather than constrained by arbitrary administrative boundaries. Both researchers (interested in the neighborhood effect) and practitioners (interested in program and service delivery) can benefit from clearer approximations. \nRegister for this eventView more information
