Many North American schools are concerned with students’ performance in mathematics, and more generally, in science courses. Over the past 15 years, there has been a growing interest in the use of active learning methods, and in assessing the effectiveness of this pedagogy in post-secondary math and science classes. Active learning, when properly incorporated into a course, has been shown to improve students’ performance while raising their level of interest and engagement.
In this talk, Dr. Shay Fuchs will explain what he means by ‘active learning’, and how he fully converted a 700 -student Calculus course into an active learning course at the University of Toronto Mississauga. He will share details of the course design, results, as well as the successes (and the challenges) of the program.
