Classroom management with shifting norms

Faculty need to understand the shifting perspective on acceptable behavior for instructors and for students in the classroom.  Student classroom behavior which was previously considered unacceptable may now be acceptable, or at least may need to be tolerated by the instructor.  Instructor classroom behavior which was previously considered acceptable or at least tolerated by students, may now be unacceptable.  Instructors need to be aware of changing norms and may need to adapt to the new norms.

By attending this course participants will be able to:

  • Recognize shifting norms for student behavior in the classroom.
  • Recognize shifting norms for instructor behavior in the classroom.
  • Implement strategies to avoid/defuse conflicts and keep the focus on student learning.
