Reclaiming the Joy in Teaching: Fostering Resilience through Asset-Based Thinking

Hosted by UT Rio Grande Valley

Presenters:

  • Alyssa G. Cavazos, Director Center for Teaching Excellence
  • Alonso Troncoso, CTE Student Teaching Consultant, Business Management, Class of 2024

According to the American Psychological Association “Resilience is the process of adapting well in the face of adversity, trauma, tragedy, threats or significant sources of stress, such as family and relationship problems, serious health problems or workplace and financial stressors. It means ‘bouncing back’ from difficult experiences. Research has shown that resilience is ordinary, not extraordinary. People commonly demonstrate resilience.”

In this session, participants will explore how we can foster resilience in our teaching and learning practices through asset-based thinking approaches. Specifically, we will explore strategies for creating opportunities where we prioritize positive emotions by reflecting alongside our students on character strengths, gratitude, hunting the good stuff, rejuvenation, and optimism.
